A leafy, upscale neighborhood, Rehavia was established on a large plot of land purchased in 1921 from the Greek Orthodox Church by the Palestine Land Development Company. It was given the biblical name Rehavia.

Rehavia became known as a neighborhood of upper-class Ashkenazi Jews, home to professors and intellectuals. Many of Israel's early leaders lived in Rehavia: David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first prime minister; Zionist leader Arthur Ruppin; Menachem Ussishkin, head of the Jewish National Fund; Golda Meir, Israel's fourth prime minister; Daniel Auster, the first Jewish mayor of Jerusalem, philosophers Hugo Bergmann and Gershon Scholem.

It’s popular for the wine bars, laid-back eateries, and gourmet food shops lining Azza Street. Trails weave among olive trees in the Valley of the Cross, a park home to the 11th-century Monastery of the Cross. The modern Jerusalem Great Synagogue has a large mezuzah collection and striking stained glass, while Beit Avi Chai hosts film screenings, lectures, and art performances.
